S3

Spanish

INFO

Curriculum Leader: Mr McCulloch

Course Description

In S3, learners who choose to study Spanish can either:

  • Study Spanish as a second Modern Language alongside French

Or

  • Stop studying French and start Spanish as a new language

Or

  • Study Spanish as a new language alongside Italian (also a beginners’ course)

Or

  • Study Spanish as a third Modern Language alongside French and Italian

When choosing Spanish as a single language, it is important that learners realise there is an expectation that they will reach the same level by the end of S4 as those continuing with French. As such, S3 Spanish is very much an accelerated language course and learners must be prepared to keep up to date with learning new vocabulary.

Skills and Topics

Learners will develop their skills in Reading, Listening, Talking and Writing. From the four contexts of Society, Learning, Employability and Culture, learners will cover topics, such as: home area and environment, holidays, school life, technology, film/TV, food/drink, healthy living, family relationships, and the world of work

Learners will also learn about the culture of Spain, including Spanish cinema music, and food, as well as the many festivals in Spanish-speaking countries.

Teaching Approaches and Resources

Those studying Spanish will continue to learn in similar ways to how they learned French in S1/2. This will include games-based learning, sentence builders, and the use of iPads and mini whiteboards. Pupils will learn to work independently as well as in pairs or small groups and they will have the opportunity to learn via a variety of activities developing language and communication skills.

As mentioned above, learners will also be encouraged to make use of iPads to research their own interests in Spanish and to develop further their Reading and Listening skills. They will also make use of various websites and apps to improve their digital skills alongside their language skills.
