Religious, Moral and Philosophical studies

INFO

Curriculum Leader: Mr McCreath

Course Description

Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS) is about asking life’s big questions and discussing diverse responses to those questions. Religious, moral and philosophical issues are constantly in the news, so a major aspect of the subject is exploring these current issues. Studying RMPS leads to a greater understanding and appreciation of people’s different views and values.

The subject helps pupils find out about world religions and how they impact people’s lives both in our own community and on a global level. In addition, non-religious perspectives are also explored and discussed.

Throughout the study of RMPS, pupils will be encouraged to reflect on their own views on the topics discussed. RMPS develops important skills including, communication, logic, literacy, problem solving, and research skills.

In S3 pupils will study the following

  • Rites of Passage: Involves the study of rites of passage such as birth, coming of age and marriage across several religious and non-religious traditions.

  • Religion and Ethics in the News: Exploring current issues in the news and studying the views for and against the issues, including religious and non-religious perspectives.

  • Morality, medicine, and the Human Body: Exploring contemporary moral issues from religious and non - religious perspectives e.g. euthanasia, use of human embryos, and the value of life.
