S3
Italian
INFO
Curriculum Leader: Mr McCulloch
Course Description
S3 Italian is a beginners’ course for those who are interested in studying another language in addition to French and/or Spanish. Please note that Italian cannot be studied as a single language. Italian can be paired with French or Spanish and some students may even choose to study all three languages in S3.
Learners who choose to study Italian in S3 will undertake a fast-paced course of vocabulary and basic grammar to develop the skills of Reading, Listening, Talking and Writing. The S3 Italian course will help learners to become confident in their use of Italian, both in the spoken and written elements of the course.
Skills and Topics
Learners will develop their skills in Reading, Listening, Talking and Writing. From the four contexts of Society, Learning, Employability and Culture, pupils will cover topics such as: basic personal information, family relationships, home area, holidays, school life, technology, film/TV, food/drink, healthy living, and the world of work.
As part of the S3 course, learners will also learn about the culture of Italy, including Italian food, traditions, cinema and music.
Teaching Approaches and Resources
Those studying Italian will learn vocabulary in similar ways to how they have studied French and Spanish in S1/2. This will include games-based learning, sentence builders, and the use of iPads and mini whiteboards. Pupils will learn to work independently as well as in pairs or small groups and they will have the opportunity to learn via a variety of activities developing language and communication skills.
As mentioned above, learners will also be encouraged to make use of iPads to research their own interests in Italian and to develop further their Reading and Listening skills. They will also make use of various websites and apps to improve their digital skills alongside their language skills.
